Research interest
I work in different problems of Mathematical Physics. My main lines of research are: i) Spectral Geometry : the relation between the spectrum of an operator and the geometry of the underlying domain. I am particularly interested in isoperimetric inequalities for eigenvalues of the Laplacian and the Schrödinger operators; ii) Stability of Matter: lower bounds on the ground state energy of N particle systems in atomic physics. I am also interested in the maximum degree of ionization of atoms and molecules; iii) Propagation of Fronts in Reaction Diffusion equations, in particular in the estimation of the speed of propagation of fronts; iv) Existence, Regularity and Uniqueness of solutions of nonlinear elliptic equations in particular in properties of Brezis-Nirenberg type problems.

Research interest
My overarching interest is advancing Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) methodologies applied to Neuroimaging. Physics principles and signal processing strategies allow us to better understand brain signals and confounds present in images from different MRI techniques. In this way, we are able to study brain structure, function, and ultimately cognition. My experience is mainly fMRI, task-based and resting-state, and the effects of what we call physiological noise on our current models. As part of the Medical Physics Research Group in the Physics Institute, I also lend my expertise in the service of other disciplines.

Research interest
My main research interest is the phenomenology of new physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. I am interested in theoretical models predicting new elementary particles that are able to explain neutrino masses and particle dark matter, as well as understanding their predictions at current (and future) high-energy physics experiments, such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. Conversely, I am interested in how LHC results are able to restrict new theories.

1. Phonons in 2D magnetic materialsStart date
Phonons - the quantization of crystal lattice vibrations - are involved in all electrical, magnetic, thermal and optical phenomena in materials. Two-dimensional systems have recently opened up exciting opportunities to tune the phonon energy spectrum and related material properties for different specific applications. In this project, the phonon band structure of the layered compounds CrI3, Cr2I2, CrCl3 and FePS3, which are systems with different magnetic behaviors, will be calculated. From these DFT calculations, the extent to which magnetism modifies the phonons will be explored and their thermodynamic properties will be calculated.

Prof. Enrique Munoz expertise is in Quantum Field Theory methods, applied to the study of many-body problems, topological phases and quantum criticality in strongly-correlated condensed matter physics. The theoretical prediction of the quantum transport properties of novel materials, such as graphene and Weyl semimetals, as well as heterostructures such as quantum dots, are among his main research areas. Non-equilibrium quantum field theory, in particular the Keldysh formalism, as well as the finite temperature Matsubara formalism are developed for these purposes. Prof. Munoz is also interested in hadronic physics under high magnetic fields and finite temperatures.

My research focuses on surface functionalization, which can be achieved by combining film deposition and surface modification processes. Both require the use of synthesis and characterization techniques currently used in Materials Science. In particular, I am currently setting up a clean laboratory to fabricate films and nanostructures by the combination of both chemical and physical vapor deposition processes. The variety of degrees of freedom involved in fabrication and modification spans diverse possibilities to improve and create novel materials for specific applications.

Research interest
For the past 30 years, I have contributed to a large variety of problems in nonlinear dynamics. Retrospectively, the common principle has been the understanding of the behavior of a variety of systems of physics such as non-equilibrium structures, Bose-Einstein condensates, wave and particle kinetics, granular materials, the elasticity of thin shells, and problems in fluid mechanics; a few contributions in applied mathematics: wave turbulence theory, singularities, discrete mathematics; as well as, more recently, in social sciences: social segregation, social interactions, and the dynamics of riots. Currently, my main subject of research is on the search for finite-time singularities in fluid motion. Diego Martinez is doing his MSc thesis on that subject. Other issues of interest concern: the theory of turbulence and its mathematical aspects, a project in collaboration with Jorge Carreño and Mircea Petrache (Math Dept). In collaboration with Thomas Frisch and Sergey Nazarenko (Nice), we work on the transition to dissipation in a Bose-Einstein flow over a sinusoidal channel. Finally, in collaboration with Yves Pomeau (Paris) and Enrique Cerda (USACH) we work on the elasticity of thin plates.

My research area is Medical physics, particularly Radiobiology. I have been working on optimizing radiotherapy treatment plans by proposing models to account for the probability of second cancer induction. The first part concerned proposing a novel technology and models to estimate neutrons and photons that are part of the stray radiation for the radiotherapy plans of specific patients. Thus, the probability of inducing a second cancer can be minimized. In the end, a software flow that links with the clinical plan has been developed to calculate the possibility of developing a second cancer and an estimation of the lymphocyte count in peripheral blood after the radiotherapy treatment. This last parameter (first ever implemented for specific treatment plans) can be relevant to anticipate the immune system response and, eventually, intervene and modify the treatment plan. With the arrival of the first preclinical irradiator in Chile (second in Latinoamerica), we are now running a laboratory where experimental radiobiological studies are being conducted. My main interest is tumor response and investigating techniques to overcome tumour hypoxia or the increase of local tumour control of radioresistant tumours.

Research interest
My main research interest is the study of high energy density physics (HEDP) in the laboratory and its applications to nuclear fusion and laboratory astrophysics. HEDP is the state of matter and radiation under extreme conditions, where energy density is larger 1e11J/m^3 or pressures over 1Mbar. I am also interested in how we can produce these regimes in the laboratory (e.g. using pulsed power or lasers) and how we can diagnose them.

1. Implementation of an optical Thomson scattering system to measure plasma parametersStart date
We recently bought a 1J laser (532nm) to implement a Thomson scattering diagnostic in Llampudken to measure plasma velocity, ion and electron temperature, density, among other parameters. It its an advanced plasma diagnostics and it involves optical spectroscopy and strong data analysis and modeling skills.

2. gas-puff experiments on llampudken generatorStart date
gas-puff is an experiment where a gas column is compressed by an intense current pulse to produce high density and temperature matter. In this work we want to study the effect of the initial plasma conditions on the development of instabilities while the column is imploding and its impact on the final plasma parameters. High temperature-density plasma is necessary to achieve the conditions needed for thermonuclear fusion or produce high yield X-ray emission from the plasma.

3. velocity measurements of supersonic plasma jets produced by a conical wire array on llampudken generator: applications to Lab AstroStart date
The interaction of supersonic plasma flows is important not only in the laboratory but also and in the Universe, e.g. HH objects and supernova remnants. One of the key parameters to determine whether the interaction is collisional or collisionless is the plasma velocity, as the interaction mean-free-path goes as v^4. Therefore, precise measurement of this parameter in the laboratory is very important to understand the physics of the interaction. In this work, we will use Thomson scattering to measure the velocity of plasma jets produced by a conical wire array driven by the Llampudken generator.

1. Laboratory astrophysics using pulsed power plasmasStart date
Several astrophysical environments can be both mimicked and studied in controlled laboratory plasma experiments. In particular, the emission of jets observed in young stellar objects in the form of Herbig-Haro objects, and different collisionality regimes such as those observed in supernovae remnants, accretion disks (amongst many others) can be studied using wire-based Z-pinches, laser-produced plasmas and/or combination of them. This job proposal relates to hands-on experimental plasma physics and it will be adequated according to educational level, backgrounds, personal interests and so on. Funding is available through projects AstroPALS: ASTROphysical Plasmas At Laboratory Scale funded by QUIMAL and Fondecyts projects.

2. Applications of outflows emitted by wire-based Z-pinchesStart date
Wire-based Z-pinches are pulsed plasma experiments where huge electrical currents (~hundreds of kA) ablate thin metallic wires toward high density plasma whose dynamics is given by the global Lorentz force of the configuration. This job proposal concentrate in the production and applications of outflows from different wire-based Z-pinch configurations. In particular, recent studies have indicated that conical wire array Z-pinches emits two types of axial outflows: a dense plasma jet and energetic charged particles. Even though the origin of charged particle emissions remains unknown, part of this project is aimed to understand such emission and to study these outflows for applications in both laboratory astrophysics and material science.
